HVAC in Langley City

Langley City at a glance

The City of Langley is a compact municipality of about 10 square kilometres, home to 28,963 people at the 2021 census. The Nicomekl River runs through the middle of the city, and Fraser Highway and Glover Road cut across it on the diagonal.

What that means for your HVAC

A dense mix of apartments, townhouses and older houses means many heating setups: shared boilers, baseboard heat, gas furnaces and newer heat pumps. Strata homes usually need approval for outdoor units; see ductless mini-splits.

Near the river

Homes in the low ground near the Nicomekl can deal with damp basements and crawl spaces, which add moisture to indoor air.

From Innes Corners to a city

Early settlement here was known as Innes Corners, after homesteader Adam Innes, and from 1911 as Langley Prairie, part of the Township. The BC Electric Railway, Fraser Highway and the Pattullo Bridge turned it into a commercial hub. In the 1950s, residents fought the Township over street lights, on which the reeve said "not a nickel" would be spent. A referendum in 1954 passed with over 85 percent, and Langley Prairie became the City of Langley on March 15, 1955. Many homes from those mid-century decades still run original ducts, so a check during a furnace replacement is worthwhile.
