Fort Langley at a glance

Fort Langley is a village of about 3,400 people on the Fraser River at the northern edge of the Township, home to Fort Langley National Historic Site, a former Hudson's Bay Company post.

The fort and the colony

The Hudson's Bay Company built the first fort in 1827, about 4 kilometres downstream, on the south bank to secure British claims if the border moved. It was too close to a fast, flood-prone stretch of river and was rebuilt upstream in 1839. By 1830 it was shipping salted salmon and cedar lumber and shingles to Hawaii, and later cranberries. Governor James Douglas chose it as a provisional colonial capital, and a town called Derby was surveyed nearby by 1858. In 2016 the Coulter Berry Building became Fort Langley's first LEED-certified building, a sign of how newer construction is changing what heating systems homes here need; see heat pumps.
